The governor of Afghanistan's northern Balkh province Mohammad Dawood Muzammel was killed in a blast on Thursday, an official confirmed to China Media Group (CMG).
Provincial police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri told CMG that the blast happened around 9:00 a.m. and two other civilians were also killed.
According to TOLOnews, the explosion rocked the Balkh provincial office in Mazar-i-Sharif city, the capital of the province, during an administrative meeting.
The nature of the blast was unclear and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid mourned the death of the senior official on Twitter, adding that an investigation into the incident is underway.
