China's Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha beat Japanese duo Harimoto Tomokazu and Hayata Hina 3-1 to defend their mixed doubles title at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Singapore Smash on Thursday.

"We haven't played them in more than a year. We did out best on both sides today. I can see their progress," Wang said after the victory.

Wang and Sun, ranked No.1 according to International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), won the mixed doubles title at the Houston World Table Tennis Championships in 2021, and are aiming at defending the title at the upcoming Durban event due to take place in late May this year.

According to ITTF, Thursday's victory marked a record of 14 straight wins for the Chinese duo in mixed doubles. They have not lost a match since Houston.

The mixed doubles event made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, and will continue to see the first gold medal of table tennis at the Olympics in Paris 2024.
