The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said that the projectile it test-fired on Thursday was a Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile, DPRK state news agency KCNA has reported.

The missile was fired amid "provocative and aggressive" joint military drills being conducted by the United States and South Korea, the agency said on Friday.

The ICBM Hwasong-17, launched at Pyongyang International Airport, traveled up to a maximum altitude of 6,045 kilometers and flew a distance of 1,000.2 km for 4,151 seconds before accurately landing on the preset area in the open waters off the East Sea, according to KCNA. The body of water is also known as the Sea of Japan.

The agency reported that the launching drill had no negative impact on the security of neighboring countries.

The drill confirmed the war readiness of the ICBM unit and the exceptional militancy of the DPRK's strategic forces and strictly verified their reliability, it added.

The Japanese government sanctioned three more DPRK citizens on Friday over their involvement in the test-firing of the missile.
