At least a dozen people were killed in a strong earthquake that shook a coastal region of Ecuador and northern Peru at midday on Saturday, causing structural damage to multiple homes, schools and medical centers.

The quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measured at a magnitude of 6.8, struck at a depth of 66.4 km about 10 km from the city of Balao in the province of Guayas.

The presidency's communication agency of Ecuador said the quake left 14 people dead and more than 380 people were injured, largely in the El Oro province.

So far, Ecuador's airports, ports and other infrastructure are operating normally.

The Ecuadorian government has initiated emergency and necessary care to the affected people, said President Guillermo Lasso, who visited the injured at a local hospital on Saturday and expressed solidarity and commitment to the victims.

According to Peruvian state media, Andina, a 4-year-old girl, died after her head was hit when a wall collapsed during the earthquake.
