When talking about Leo Tolstoy in China, the Chinese translator Sheng Junfeng, known by his pen name Cao Ying, is a familiar name to many literary enthusiasts as he is the translator of The Complete Works of Leo Tolstoy.
Born in 1923 in east China's Zhejiang Province, Sheng Junfeng is one of the leading Chinese translators, making numerous Russian literature accessible to Chinese readers. According to his students, Sheng spent one-third of his life trying to build a bridge to Russian literature for the benefit of his compatriots.
Sheng Junfeng began translating the complete works of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy in 1960. The Tolstoy novels he translated have influenced a huge number of readers in China.
Thanks to Sheng's tireless efforts, masterpieces like "War and Peace," and "Anna Karenina" have had a significant influence on Chinese literature and culture. Tolstoy's ideas on social justice, non-violence and spiritualism have also deeply influenced many Chinese intellectuals.
Sheng Junfeng and his translations have led countless readers to the hall of Russian literature. In addition to Tolstoy, he also translated the works of Mikhail Sholokhov and other literary giants.
Sheng was honored with the Maxim Gorky Literature Prize, a top honor in the Russian literary world, in 1987. He remains the only Chinese translator to have pocketed this coveted award.
On Oct. 25, 2015, Sheng passed away at a hospital in Shanghai, at the age of 93.
