The first batch of 6,500 tonnes of Chinese-made 50-meter steel rails departed China's Tianjin Port on Tuesday for Serbia in Europe, marking China's first export of such steel rails to the European market.

A total of 22,000 tonnes of rails will be shipped to support the construction of the Hungary-Serbia Railway.

BRI flagship project

The 350-km Hungary-Serbia Railway is not only an important BRI project in Europe, but also the flagship cooperation project between China and central and eastern European countries.

With a designed maximum speed of 200 km per hour, the railway will link Budapest, the capital of Hungary, and Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Upon completion, travel time between the two capitals will be reduced to about 3 hours from 8.

High-tech production

To improve the straightness of the rails, China has applied for the first time the "universal rolling process" to the production of 60E1 steel rails, achieving the successful production with product quality beyond user requirement standard.

The total export volume of the rails for the project exceeds 22,000 tonnes, which were transported by the "rail-sea-rail" intermodal method. It is expected that all rails will be shipped out of Tianjin Port before the end of this May.
