A police raid on a favela near Rio de Janeiro on Thursday left at least 13 people dead, including the suspected leader of a criminal gang active in northern Brazil, local media have reported.
"There are 13 dead, two individuals detained and a large number of weapons seized," Fabricio Oliveira, a member of the Rio de Janeiro Special Assets Coordination police unit, told a press conference.
