The U.S. military carried out "precision airstrikes" in Syria on Thursday night after five U.S. service members and a contractor were injured in an unmanned aerial vehicle attack "of Iranian origin" earlier in the day, the Pentagon said in a statement.

"At the direction of President Biden, I authorized U.S. Central Command forces to conduct precision airstrikes tonight in eastern Syria against facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC)," said Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III in the statement.

"The airstrikes were conducted in response to today's attack as well as a series of recent attacks against Coalition forces in Syria by groups affiliated with the IRGC," read the statement.

"Horrific" explosions were reported in the Deir ez-Zor area of eastern Syria, causing a number of injuries, according to Syrian media.
