Honduras, a Central American country with unique cultural blend

China and Honduras signed a joint communique in Beijing on Sunday on the establishment of diplomatic relations. What kind of country is Honduras? Here is a brief introduction.

Honduras is a Central American country bordering the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean in the south.  Over three quarters of its land area consists of mountains and plateaus, making it the most mountainous country in central America.

With numerous mountains, lakes, islands, tropical rainforests and coral reefs, Honduras is able to sustain a rich biodiversity. Butterflies in different colors, flamboyant parrots, anteaters and other animals roam freely in the woods.

Honduras is also rich in mineral resources, especially its silver reserves which top Central America.

Agriculture is one of the country's economic pillars. The tropical and temperate climate allows farmers here to plant coffee, banana, cotton, coconut, tobacco, sugar cane, among others.

It was home to the Maya civilization.

In the 16th century, the Spanish colonization brought the Spanish language as well as customs, architecture, music, traditional costumes to Honduras' indigenous people, creating a unique cultural blend.
