Japan's Shoma Uno defended his title at the World Figure Skating Championships with 301.14 points in Saitama, Japan on Saturday.

South Korea's Cha Junhwan finished second with 296.03, followed by American teenager Ilia Malinin with 288.44.

Uno won last year's edition in the absence of Olympic champions Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen.

He finished five quadruples in Saturday's free skate to retain his leading edge from the short program, while Malinin completed six quadruples, including the first quad Axel recorded in World Championships history.

Host nation Japan clinched three gold medals at home, including Uno in the men's singles, Kaori Sakamoto defending hers in the women's singles a day earlier, and Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara in the pairs event.

In Saturday's ice dance competition, American duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the title. Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri of Italy came second, and Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada finished third.
