'Micro holidays' a bright spot in post-pandemic tourism

As Chinese holiday-makers grab their passports and engage in what's being called "revenge travel" following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, the appetite for local city breaks and staycations, which were popular during the pandemic, remains. For many in the southern city of Guangzhou, the idea of enjoying all that nature can provide on one's own doorstep is too tempting to turn down. However, analysts say the rapid recovery in local tourism is not without challenges. Tour suppliers are struggling to fill a labor shortage after an exodus of staff during the pandemic, and local governments must revisit their policies on rural revitalization, balancing large-scale investments with small boutique sites.
