Adderall is a prescription "smart drug" typically used to treat conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some U.S. college students often use it to increase focus and productivity. According to a survey by Ohio State University in 2022 of 6,510 undergraduate and graduate students from 15 institutions across the U.S., nearly one in six have used stimulants like Adderall, Ritalin or Dexedrine normally prescribed for ADHD for non-medical use and 76 percent used them to study.

Steve is a director and artist from Detroit who graduated in 2020. He said the main reason for the abuse of Adderall on U.S. campuses is that many prescribed users would make money selling it illegally to students.
