Peruvian government announced "definitive withdrawal" of ambassador in Colombia, according to a Foreign Ministry statement on Wednesday.
This decision was made in response to "the repeated interference and offensive expressions" of the Colombian president, who "persists in distorting reality by not knowing that former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo carried out a coup on December 7, 2022," said the statement.
Diplomatic relations between Peru and Colombia are formally at the level of charge d'affaires, with the withdrawal of the Peruvian ambassador, the statement added.
Last December, Pedro Castillo announced plans to dissolve Congress and install an emergency government, which Peru's Ombudsman described as an "attempted coup d'état." Castillo was detained by police in the capital city Lima after lawmakers impeached him in Congress.
