At least 31 people were killed while seven more are missing after a ferry caught fire in southern Philippines. Some 250 passengers were aboard the MV Lady Mary Joy 3 when the vessel erupted in flames near Baluk-Baluk Island at 11 p.m. on March 29. Some of the travelers were jolted awake by the noise and plunged into the water to escape the blaze, but others were trapped in the burning ship. The Philippine Coast Guard, villagers and local fishermen rescued those who had jumped into the sea. At least 23 have been injured and hospitalized, while search and rescue operations are continuing for seven more missing people.
