European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted on Friday that she had a phone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
"We exchanged about the situation in Ukraine and East Asia and agreed to keep in close contact over developments," she said, adding that they also discussed the upcoming G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May.
