The essence of the second so-called "Summit for Democracy" is to categorize countries according to the U.S. standards and to intervene in other countries' internal affairs to serve the U.S. interests, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Friday.
Mao made the remarks in response to a question that critics said the summit, co-hosted by the U.S., is more of a show to divide the world.
The "Summit for Democracy" seriously runs counter to the true meaning of democracy, the trend of democracy in international relations and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and is not conducive to international solidarity to meet common challenges, Mao said.
