Senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi met with former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, in Beijing on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Wang praised Fukuda for his contributions to China-Japan friendship over the years and hoped more people in Japan would play a positive role in improving China-Japan relations.

Wang said now China has reasons to be concerned about the possible setback in Japan's policy towards China, as well as doubts about whether Japan will continue to adhere to the path of peaceful development.

He stated that China hopes Japan will return to the four China-Japan political documents, paving the way for the two countries' relationship and exchanges in various sectors to be revitalized.

Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, and this year marks the 45th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan, according to Wang.

Fukuda, also former chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia, congratulated China on the success of the Boao Forum, recognizing China's global influence and efforts in resolving regional disputes.

He said the relationship between China and Japan is of great significance, hoping to keep the high-level exchanges and enhance the mutual understanding for peace and development in Asia.
