Eight people, including two children, have been found dead so far in a marsh near the Quebec-U.S. border, police in the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne said on Friday.
"All are believed to have been attempting illegal entry into the U.S. from Canada. The circumstances surrounding the deaths continue to be investigated. There is no threat to the general public," the police statement explained.
Police are continuing to search the waterways for a missing person who was last seen on Wednesday operating a boat that was found near the bodies.
Early media reports said the victims were members of two families of Romanian and Indian descent who were trying to cross from Canada into the United States.
