At least two tornadoes battered parts of the southern U.S. state of Arkansas on Friday afternoon, causing "catastrophic" damage in the state's capital city Little Rock and adjacent towns, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

According to NBC News, Pulaski County in Arkansas announced a confirmed fatality in North Little Rock but did not immediately give details.

Region 8 News reported at least two deaths following the tornadoes in Wynne, 170 kilometers to the northeast of Little Rock, citing a coroner.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, governor of Arkansas, has activated the Arkansas National Guard to assist Arkansas State Police and local law enforcement around the state.

According to images and videos posted on social media, large trees were uprooted, rooftops smashed and buildings severely damaged as tornadoes hit.

More than 78,000 people were left without power across the state, according to Poweroutage.us.

The turbulent weather came one week after a previous swarm of thunderstorms unleashed a deadly tornado that devastated the Mississippi town of Rolling Fork, destroying many of the community's 400 homes and killing 26 people.
