Finland on Tuesday became the 31st member of NATO, wrapping up its historic strategic shift with the deposit of its accession documents to the alliance.
"With receipt of this instrument of accession, we can now declare that Finland is the 31st member of the North Atlantic Treaty," said U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the official keeper of the treaty.
Finnish President Saul Niinisto said Finland's most significant contribution to NATO's common deterrence and defense would be to defend its own territory. There is still significant work to be done to coordinate this with NATO, he said.
"It is a great day for Finland and I want to say that it is an important day for NATO," Niinisto said at a news conference.
Along with Sweden, Finland handed in its official letter of application on May 18, 2022. Sweden's application has yet to be ratified by Türkiye and Hungary.
