While few people would imagine that a desert backwater could be transformed into a world-famous wine producing region in three decades, this is exactly what has happened in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Chen Deqi, a businessman from China's south, has spent 15 years here, during which time planted 5 million trees and established a 6,600-hectare vineyard. Likewise, Christelle Chene was intrigued enough by the area's potential for wine making, and made Ningxia her home. What features of Ningxia have drawn people from far and wide?
