South African request to extradite Gupta brothers dismissed by UAE court
A United Arab Emirates (UAE) court has dismissed South Africa's extradition request for Atul and Rajesh Gupta, brothers who face charges of political corruption under former South African President Jacob Zuma, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services of South Africa Ronald Lamola said on Friday.
South Africa received diplomatic communication from the UAE on April 6 that a UAE court had made the decision on February 13, Lamola said.
The court had ruled that the UAE had jurisdiction to prosecute the Guptas for money laundering offences alleged to have been committed in the UAE and South Africa, according to Lamola.
He added that South Africa would "promptly appeal" the decision.
