Rare footage shows wild camels with offspring in NW China

New footage shows three adult wild camels and a newborn leisurely drinking from a small pond within the Gansu Annanba Wild Camel National Nature Reserve in northwest China's Gansu Province.

Wild camels (Camelus ferus) number less than 1,000 globally and are highlighted on the IUCN Red List as "critically endangered." Nearly two thirds of wild camels live in the reserve. In recent years, the reserve has stepped up protection efforts and strictly prohibited human activities. The living environment of wild animals has been significantly improved and the population of wild camels has grown steadily.

Because their scattering in remote desert areas renders observation exceedingly difficult, the rare video provides valuable information for monitoring and researching the species.
