Disrespecting stern and repeated warnings from China, Tsai Ing-wen traveled to the U.S. on March 29 and met with Kevin McCarthy, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on April 6. The meeting sparked strong public discontent in China's Taiwan region. When Tsai returned on April 7, local organizations launched joint demonstrations at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei to condemn her meeting with McCarthy.

Protesters said Tsai's trip gambled the fate of the people in Taiwan and exposed them to the potential risk of war. They strongly called for the support of the one-China principle and hoped for peace across the Taiwan Straits.
