Ancient and modern culture collides at Anhui's Liyang-in Lane

Surrounded by mountains and rivers and riddled with alleyways and parks, Liyang-in Lane has a rich history of over 1,800 years. Also known as Liyang Old Street, this tourist spot in Tunxi District of Anhui's Huangshan City boasts three blocks – devoted to food, artistic creations and cultural experiences, respectively.

Several well-preserved Huizhou-style residential buildings have survived the tumultuous changes this historic area has experienced. Their white walls and black tiles are among the hallmarks of one of China's most prized architectural styles from ancient times.

Nowadays, many fashionably designed buildings have been built to serve as shopping malls, restaurants, homestays and more here. They also draw on the aesthetics of Hui architectural style to represent the elegance of traditional Chinese culture. This area perfectly juxtaposes ancient and modern buildings and cultures.

Liyang-in Lane is separated from Tunxi Old Street by a river. After the latest of numerous renovations, the street has taken on a brand-new appearance. The scenic spot is free and open all day, with convenient transportation to boot. You don't even need a plan or itinerary - just wandering aimlessly around its quaint streets will leave you full of surprises and pleasant memories. Meanwhile, the riverside bars, cafes and leisure districts are the perfect place to unwind. At night, the colorful decorations add an even more exotic ambience, yet the area remains relatively tranquil and calm.

Many cultural events were also staged here, ranging from lantern shows and dragon dances to Hui Opera performances and parades of traditional Chinese clothing. Visitors can join in the fun to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture while soaking up the festive atmosphere.
