It's late spring, but the Kazan River valley in Bortala of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is still covered in snow and ice. Despite the cold, Chinese police maintain their patrols on the China-Kazakhstan border there. The valley sits between the Alatao and Biezhentao mountains. Glaciers there are part of the source of the Bortala, an inland river in western Xinjiang.
