The opening ceremony of this year's "Balikatan" or "shoulder-to-shoulder" military exercises, the biggest ever between the Philippines and the United States, was held on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

The drills, which end on April 28, will involve 17,600 participants, 12,200 of whom are from the U.S.

According to a China Media Group correspondent, protests were staged on Tuesday morning in front of the army headquarters in Quezon City against the drills and the increased U.S. military presence in the Philippines.
