China will ensure energy security as energy consumption continues to increase, Zhang Jianhua, head of the National Energy Administration, announced at a press conference on Wednesday.
He acknowledged the need for fossil energy to continue playing a crucial role in meeting increasing energy demand, despite the challenges posed by the development of new energy sources, lack of certain key energy technologies and extreme weather.
Zhang outlined multiple approaches for better-securing energy supply, including enhancing the supply capability of different energy sources, such as fossil energy, oil and gas, and clean energy, as well as reinforcing the country's energy reserves.
Zhang also mentioned the need of strengthening self-reliance in the energy supply chain, as well as pushing forward the development of key technologies in the sector.
Additionally, the country will promote low-carbon energy transition to increase non-fossil energy consumption.
Lastly, Zhang stressed the importance of strengthening the prediction and early warning of energy security risks.
