00:51

In this episode, Tianran He and Angela Fu are in historic Datong. Located in northern China's Shanxi Province, some 1500 years ago Datong was the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty, which saw nomads unite northern China and Buddhism spread throughout the country. At the renowned Yunggang Grottoes where giant Buddhas were carved out of cliffs, our hosts discover Datong's multicultural past and sample the emperor's favorite cake. They seek out the remains of a Jesuit church beneath the Great Wall of China, and find in the local cuisine elements that echo the past, and modern-day recipes for thousand-year old dishes.
