As an endemic plant species in China, Plantago fengdouensis was once considered extinct in the wild.

But according to Sichuan Provincial Forestry and Grassland Administration on April 13, during a field investigation on Chenghua Island in Yibin City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, a research team from Yibin University has found more than 1,800 clumps of the species.

It is the first time the species has been found in the province and the largest wild population found so far.

Native to the Three Gorges area, Plantago fengdouensis is under China's national second-class protection. Due to the growth in the flooded zone in the Three Gorges area and low wild population, the species is so rare that is given the name "giant panda plant" here.

To protect the species, Wuhan Botanical Garden under the Chinese Academy of Sciences has adopted the method of transplantation to save it from extinction. Also, the seeds of the species were sent into space by the Shenzhou-13 manned spacecraft in the hope of mutagenesis breeding taking place.
