The G7 pledged on Sunday to abandon fossil fuels faster and urged other countries to do the same, but failed to set any new deadlines to eliminate polluting energy sources such as coal.

"We underline our commitment, in the context of a global effort, to accelerate the phase-out of unabated fossil fuels, so as to achieve net-zero in energy systems by 2050 at the latest," the G7 climate ministers said in a statement after talks in northern Japan.
