Many international powers such as China, the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and the EU have appealed for an immediate end to hostilities in Sudan. Neighboring Egypt and South Sudan offered to mediate. Zhang Yongpeng, a senior research fellow at the Institute of West Asian and African Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, says that British colonization of Sudan was partially to blame for Sudan's power struggle.
