On April 16, 2023, spotted seals were released into the waters of Dalian City, northeast China's Liaoning Province. Local authorities and organizations participated and tracked the status of the released seals.

Spotted seal is considered endangered animal and is under first-class state protection in China. The seals released during the activity were all in juvenile stage. Five of them were rescued this February, and two of them were captive-bred.

Scientists will track the status of the released seals by the satellite tracker and evaluate the effect of the release. According to Tian Jiashen, the associate researcher with Liaoning Academy of Marine Aquatic Sciences, the weights of the seven spotted seals have all reached the standard for releasing, therefore they chose to release them after a series of test including blood biochemical tests and physical examination, which can help scientists to make sure they can survive after releasing.

According to the staff of the activity, every winter and spring, a large number of spotted seals migrate from the Pacific Ocean to the Bohai Sea and the northern Yellow Sea near Dalian City. In recent years, with the strengthening of marine ecological protection, the population of spotted seals in Liaodong Bay located in Liaoning Province is about 2,000 and has an increasing trend.
