The rare and elusive orchid mantis, known as hymenopus coronatus, has recently been found in southwest China's Yunnan Province, exciting locals and entomologists with its beautiful appearance and incredible floral mimicry skills.

The orchid mantis, usually called the "flower mantis," is a master of disguise. Its body resembles that of an orchid flower, with four legs resembling white and pink flower petals which allows it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings, making it a formidable predator of other insects.

"It's called the orchid mantis. It is one of the most beautiful and rare mantises in Mantodea. We consulted related information and this is the first time for this mantis to show up in Ning'er," said Yang Mengxing, director of the local forestry and grass service center.

The orchid mantis is typically found in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Its discovery in China is a significant development, as it expands the range of this fascinating species and raises awareness about the importance of protecting natural habitats.
