Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Kherson and Luhansk regions on Monday, TASS reported on Tuesday, citing the Kremlin.

Putin heard reports from commanders of the airborne forces and the Dnieper army group as well as other senior officers who briefed him on the situation in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in the south.

"President Putin's visits to the Kherson Region and the Lugansk People's Republic, as well as meetings at the headquarters of the 'Dnepr' and 'East' were not prepared in advance," the Kremlin press service was reported as saying.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, visited troops in the eastern town of Avdiivka, about 70 kilometers southwest of Bakhmut, and was briefed on the battlefield situation, his office said.

On his visit to Avdiivka on Tuesday, Zelenskyy's office said he had handed out awards to his troops, telling them: "I have the honor to be here today, to thank you for your service, for defending our land, Ukraine, our families."

Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson were incorporated into the Russian Federation last September. This is Putin's first visit to the Kherson and the Luhansk regions.

Russia says its "special military operation" in Ukraine, launched on February 24 last year was necessary to protect its security against what it sees as a hostile and aggressive West.

Ukraine and its Western allies say Russia is waging an unprovoked conflict aimed at grabbing territory.
