China on Wednesday urged the Guatemalan government not to help any secessionist act of "Taiwan independence," which goes against the international trend and the voice of Guatemalan people.
The remarks were made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin at a regular press briefing in response to a question regarding Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei's planned visit to Taiwan this weekend.
The fact that China has established diplomatic ties with 182 countries proves that the one-China principle gains the overwhelming support of the international community and represents the prevailing trend of the world, Wang said, noting the Taiwan authorities' attempt to expand the so-called "international space" is nothing but a deceptive gambit.
He stressed that the one-China principle has become a widely-held basic norm of international relations and a prevailing consensus of the international community, and "Taiwan independence" is a dead end.
Any attempt that ignores the world trend and the overwhelming support of the international community is doomed to failure, said Wang.
