In a display of Chinese performance art in the UK, the National Ballet of China staged "The Peony Pavilion" at the 2011 Edinburgh International Festival, accompanied by the National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra. Described as a marriage of traditional Chinese instrumentation and dance with Western classical ballet, the production tells the story of Du Liniang, a woman from a rich family who falls asleep near a peony pavilion and dreams of a scholar she has never met. "The Peony Pavilion" was originally written in the form of China's Kunqu opera tradition in 1598, coincidently around the same year as Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," and took up to 20 hours to perform. The 2011 performance in Scotland received a standing ovation.
