"Taiwan independence" and cross-Straits peace and stability are as irreconcilable as fire and water, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Wang Wenbin said on Friday at a regular press conference.
Recently, some countries have rallied against what they termed as "changing the status quo in the Taiwan Straits by force." Such rhetoric, which disregards facts and distorts right and wrong, is "discourse traps with ulterior motives," the spokesperson said.
Stressing the status quo being "both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to the same China," Wang said that Taiwan is part of China's territory, and that China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been divided.
It is the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces pressing for "Taiwan independence" and "de-sinicization," and foreign forces selling weapons to Taiwan and promoting the "Ukraine today, Taiwan tomorrow" narrative, that are the culprits destroying the status quo in the Taiwan Straits, Wang said.
Only talking about maintaining peace in the Taiwan Straits without talking about opposing "Taiwan independence" essentially conveys support for the latter, which will definitely have a serious impact on peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, Wang said, adding that China firmly opposes it.
China, together with the international community, will firmly uphold the one-China principle, firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and truly maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, Wang said.
