North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Friday that all NATO allies have agreed that Ukraine will eventually become a member state but the main focus now is to ensure the country prevails against Russia.

Stoltenberg made the remarks to reporters ahead of a meeting with the Ukraine defense contact group at the Ramstein air base in Germany.

He noted that Kyiv must have "the deterrence to prevent new attacks" once the conflict ends.

Russia said on Thursday that preventing Ukraine from joining the transatlantic alliance remains one of the main goals of its "special military operation."

"Otherwise it would pose a serious, significant threat to the security of our country," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.
