U.S. President Joe Biden is reportedly considering announcing his decision to run for reelection as soon as next week, multiple U.S. media outlets reported on Thursday.
Biden's aides had stated that they were not aware that a final decision on timing had been made, but that Biden, a Democrat, had been considering Tuesday, April 25th. It is expected that the announcement will be made in the form of a video released to supporters, according to AP.
Additionally, it has been reported that Biden has chosen Chicago as the city in which he will formally become the nominee next year. However, the White House has not yet responded to these reports.
Biden has stated that he intends to run for reelection and last week, after a trip to Ireland, he said he would announce his plans "relatively soon". Despite this, some of his supporters have expressed doubt regarding his candidacy. As one of the oldest leaders in the world, he would be 86 at the end of a second term if he commits to another four-year term.
Currently, although his approval ratings in opinion surveys are low, he does not face a serious threat from a Democratic challenger.
On the other hand, former U.S. President Donald Trump, who lost to Biden in the 2020 election but has refused to concede, announced in November that he would seek the party's nomination for the 2024 presidential election, and is currently the front-runner in the Republican race, according to polls.
The 2024 U.S. presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.
