Hundreds of firefighters were sent on April 20 to battle steppe fires spreading across China's northern borders from Mongolia and Russia.

The flares have been put down as of midnight. Firefighters are still patrolling the borders in case the fires came alive again.

Two grassland fires started in Mongolia on the afternoon of April 20. One spread across the border to the New Barag Right Banner in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and the second fire spread southward along the border.
