Russia's Evgeniia Chikunova set a new world record in the women's 200m breaststroke with two minutes and 17.55 seconds at the Russian swimming championships in Kazan on Friday, beating the previous record set by South Africa's Tatjana Schoenmaker at the Tokyo Olympics.
World Aquatics, the international governing body of aquatic sports, said through a spokesperson that they will "follow the World Aquatics world record process of approval that any other world record follows," and that "only when the necessary steps are taken and verified can a world record then be ratified."
Russian and Belarusian swimmers are still banned from competing internationally, but earlier this month World Aquatics started to explore the possibility for them to compete as neutrals.
Last month, the International Olympic Committee released a set of recommendations for international sports federations to admit athletes from the two countries to return to international competitions.
This year's world swimming championships are scheduled to take place in Fukuoka, Japan from July 14 to 30.
