China's ecological 'red line' demarcation work completed

The Ministry of Natural Resources announced on Saturday that China has complete its demarcation work of the ecological "red line," identifying the country's crucial ecological zones under mandatory and rigorous protection.

It is the first time that China's ecological "red line" demarcation been completed, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources. The red lines mainly delineate in the ecological zones of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, important ecological zones of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, the Northeast Forest Belt, the northern sand-prevention belt, hilly areas of southern China and China's coastal zones.

No less than 3.15 million square kilometers of the country's territorial area has been demarcated within the red lines, with the land area more than 3 million square kilometers and marine area no less than 0.15 million square kilometers, according to Zhang Bing from the Ministry of Natural Resources. 

Important eco-systems such as wetlands, mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds are included, as well as various national parks and nature reserves.
