Long-tail, black neck and red face, the unusual bird wandering in the forest is a Mrs Hume's pheasant (Syrmaticus humiae), also known as Hume's pheasant.

It is the first time that footage of the rare pheasant has been filmed in Laojun Mountain of Lijiang City, southwest China's Yunnan Province.

According to the photographer Qiao Lihua, the Hume's pheasants mostly forage in forests and thickets, and normally roost on trees at night. In addition, the birds are highly alert, so it's hard to spot them.

Classed as a near threatened species on the IUCN Red List, the pheasant can only be found in certain forested habitats of Myanmar, Thailand and India, as well as Chinese provinces and regions like Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi.

Back to early 2020, only about 150 wild bird species had been recorded in Laojun Mountain. After years of better conservation and research, nearly 300 different bird species have been filmed in the area.
