Beijing said on Monday that the one-China principle conforms to the prevailing trend in the world, in a rebuff to Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei's visit to China's Taiwan region.

Some Guatemalan politicians said it is unconscionable for their country to not have diplomatic ties with China, as the vast majority of countries around the world recognize Taiwan as part of China, noted Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

These comments have fully demonstrated the fact that the one-China principle not only is aligned with the interests of the international community but also corresponds with what the people want, Mao added.

China is the second-largest exporter to and the fifth leading export destination of Guatemala, she said, adding that recognizing the one-China principle and developing ties with China conforms to the fundamental interests of Guatemala and the desires of its people.
