China urges UK to remain 'sober-minded' over its position on Taiwan
China on Monday urged the United Kingdom to remain "sober-minded" over its approach to major issues of principle after British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly claimed the Taiwan question was not a domestic matter for China in a recent interview.
"There is only one China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory," Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said at a press conference. "The UK foreign secretary obviously needs to make up missed history lessons."
Noting that Taiwan's return to China is an important component of the post-war international order, Mao said the one-China principle is the political basis and precondition of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the UK.
She said that no other country has any right to intervene as the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair.
