Tuesday marks World Malaria Day, an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment to malaria prevention and control. Around 50 years ago, Chinese scientists, led by chemist Tu Youyou, discovered and successfully extracted artemisinin, one of the world's most effective malaria-fighting medicines. By the end of 2021, China had provided billions of doses of artemisinin medicines and trained tens of thousands of anti-malaria professionals to help treat patients in developing countries.
