China's Zhang Zhizhen beat qualifer Jurij Rodionov from Austria 7-6 (6), 6-4 in 90 minutes in the opening round of the Madrid Open on Thursday.

This was the first time for Zhang himself, as well as any Chinese mainland male player, to claim a victory on clay court and at ATP 1000 level.

Zhang, who will rise to world No. 95 after Thursday, will next face No. 21 seed Denis Shapovalov from Canada.

In August 2022, Wu Yibing was recorded as the first Chinese mainland male player to enter the main draw of a Grand Slam in the Open Era at the U.S. Open. He was later joined by Zhang, who also entered the U.S. Open main draw as a qualifier.
