Tunisian President Kais Saied on Thursday appointed a new ambassador to Syria, the Tunisian presidency said in a statement.

Saied on Thursday supervised the handing over of credentials to Mohamed Al-Mahdhabi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tunisia to the Syrian Arab Republic, in the presence of Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar, the statement said.

On April 12, Tunisia and Syria decided to reopen their embassies and resume diplomatic ties, ending years of severance since February 2012 when Tunisia cut ties with Syria after the Syrian civil war broke out.
