With over 300 billion positioning calls a day, the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is China's largest space-based system. On June 23, 2020, the BDS successfully sent its 55th satellite into space, marking the completion of the third-generation global navigation system (BDS-3). As a result, China has become the third nation to independently develop and own a global navigation satellite system.
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has advocated for scientific innovation and the mastering of core technologies, propelling China's scientific and technological innovation onto a rapid development path.
According to the latest statistics of the World Intellectual Property Organization, China's ranking in the Global Innovation Index rose to 11th in 2022 from 34th in 2012.
